David Kenneth Benton, the only child of Kenneth and Verna (Woychik) Benton, was born on February 5, 1938 in Winona, Minnesota. His early years were spent in Winona where he attended school and worshiped at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. When he was a teenager, the family moved to Richfield, where graduated from Richfield High School in 1956. During this time David developed an interest in stock car racing and he got involved in the sport. His first job as a teenager was at the movie theater in Richfield. Later he sold Kirby vacuums before becoming a licensed insurance agent and making a career in the insurance industry. Most notably he served as vice president of marketing at Minnesota Mutual Fire and Casualty. David was united in marriage to Treva E. Haugen on May 17, 1969 in Milbank South Dakota. They lived in the Twin Cities area and Owatonna, before moving to Spencer, Iowa and finally to Treva’s hometown of Glenwood in 1990. Following the move, David continued working until 2007, at which time he retired from United Fire and Casualty. Sadly, just two years later, their 40-year love story came to an end when Treva passed away at the age of 69.

David enjoyed participating in the Pope County Men’s Chorus and the Glenwood Lutheran Church choir, as well as attending car shows, watching MN Twins baseball and NASCAR, dancing and volunteering at Central Square. He was a member of Old Iron Company, Central Lakes Cruzers, a lifetime member of Minnesota Street Rod Association and the National Street Rod Association. He was also a member of Glenwood Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway Molsjon lodge.

David’s family will remember him as funny, optimistic, selfless and gentle. His silly sense of humor kept them all laughing even through his last days. He was most happy when spending time with family. He adored his grandchildren and later the great-grandchildren.

In March of 2025, David moved to Bethany on the Lake in Alexandria. He passed away there on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the age of 88.

David is survived by eight children, Chris (Vicki) Benton of Loveland, CO, Deb (Vern) Osterbauer of Forest Lake, Becky Blue of Brooklyn Park, Steve (Kristine) Benton of Starbuck, Craig (Laura) Benton of St Paul, Sandra Andersen of Glenwood, Rod Benton of Two Harbors, and Heather Galvin of Appleton; his daughter-in-law, Diane Benton of East Bethel; 21 grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his wife’s sisters, Pauline Hoffman of Glenwood, Virginia Cahoon of Mason City, IA, and Sonia Byrd of Nashville, TN and longtime friend, Laura Johnson of Glenwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Treva in 2009; a son, David; and granddaughter, Courtney.
